CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer fell to Berry College, 4-2 in their non-conference season opener on Friday night at Ritchie Field.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-1, while Berry improves to 1-0.
After a pair of Viking shots hit the post early, Maine Maritime's MacKenzie Carter (Ashland, Maine) capitalized on a misfeed from the Berry keeper to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.
Berry evened things up in the 35th minute when Lauren Caylor found the back of the net, past Maine Maritime's Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.).
The visitors jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the second half, when Caylor scored her second goal of the game but Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) sank a redirected goalie kick into the net to make it 2-2 with 35 minutes to play.
Berry retook the lead in the 65th minute on the foot of Tori Toellner and added another goal in the 84th minute to claim the season-opening victory.
Conway and Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine) split time in net for the Mariners, combining for nine saves. MacArthur collected five saves in her collegiate debut, while Alyssa Stevens and Maggie Jones split time in net for the Vikings. Jones collected four saves in her 45 minutes.
The Mariners edged the Vikings in shots on goal, 9-4 and in corner kick opportunities, 6-4, but Berry outshot the Mariners 22-12 overall.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday night when they host NESCAC's Bates College at 5:30 pm.
