FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball edged UMaine-Farmington 53-50 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Dearborn Gymnasium.
How it Happened: The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead early and led 11-7 at 6:02, but the Beavers went on an 6-1 run to lead 13-12 after the first quarter. The Beavers led for most of the second quarter, until a jumper from Samantha Mason (Lamoine, Maine) gave the Mariners a 22-21 lead at halftime.
The Mariners began to pull away in the third, but the Beavers used a six-point run midway through the quarter to cut the Mariners' lead to one (31-30) at 3:32. The Mariners carried a 40-37 advantage into the final quarter, and hung on for the win.
Inside the Numbers: Mason scored a team-high 13 points and added three rebounds to lead the Mariners, while Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and added a block.
Alex Bessey and McKenna Brodeur led the Beavers with 13 points each, Bessey added four rebounds, two steals and an assist while Brodeur secured a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and chipped in with three assists and three blocks.
The Mariners shot 30.0 percent from the floor and 20.0 percent from behind the arc, while the Beavers shot 24.6 percent overall and 7.1 percent from three. The Mariners held a 50-43 advantage in rebounds.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the NAC, while the Beavers drop to 10-10 on the season and 7-1 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday night when they host UMaine-Presque Isle for a NAC matchup at 5:30 pm.
