CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Husson University 57-48 on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
How it Happened: The two teams battled closely in the first quarter but the Eagles carried a narrow 13-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Mariners used a seven-point run to take a 23-17 lead with 5:00 remaining in the half. The Eagles chipped away at the deficit and the Mariners took a 28-26 lead into halftime.
Maine Maritime hit back-to-back threes to jump out to an eight-point (34-28) lead early in the third, but the Eagles once again closed the gap, and Vanessa Duarte hit a long three as time expired to give the Eagles a 40-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles outscored the Mariners 17-10 in the final quarter to claim the victory.
Inside the Numbers: Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with 12 points, six rebounds and an assist, while Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) tallied a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 11 points, three blocks and two assists.
Sami Ireland led Husson with a game-high 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while Bailey Donovan contributed 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block.
The Mariners shot 33.3 percent from the floor, and 20.8 percent from three-point land, while the Eagles shot 40.4 percent overall and 9.1 percent from behind the arch. The Mariners outrebounded the Eagles 41-35 on the evening, but committed 22 turnovers, while the Eagles only committed 11.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 8-7 on the season, 5-0 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday, January 25 when they travel to UMaine-Presque Isle for a NAC matchup at 2:00 pm.
