The two teams battled closely in the first quarter until the Mariners scored six-unanswered points to take a 14-11 advantage into the second quarter. Maine Maritime held the Kangaroos to just nine points in the second quarter to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.
The Mariners picked up where they left off in the third quarter, holding the Kangaroos to eight points, taking a double-digit lead (42-28) lead into the final quarter. Canton outscored the Mariners 15-13 in the final 10 minutes, but the Mariners secured the 55-43 victory.
Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 15 points, on all three-pointers, four rebounds, and an assist.
Alayne Felix and Megan McLean contributed 13 points each, Felix added three rebounds and two assists, while McLean chipped in with five assists, two rebounds and a steal. Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three blocks and a steal.
Antanasia Chambers led the Roos with 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists.
The Mariners shot 38.5 percent from the floor, while Canton shot 28.6 percent. Maine Maritime held a 38-31 edge in rebounds.
Maine Maritime Academy's Last Game: Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball cruised to a 78-38 victory over UMaine-Machias on Tuesday night in non-conference action inside of Reynolds Gymnasium.
The Mariners jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, cruising to the 40-point victory.
Melinda Ogden led the Mariners with 17 points, including five three-pointers, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) and Claire Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded 12 points each. Charters contributed two rebounds and a steal, while Felix added six rebounds and three steals, Lauren Plissey pulled down a team-best nine rebounds to go along with eight points, three assists and a block and Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) led the Mariners with six assists, and chipped in with six points, and three steals.
Caitlyn Lyons led the Clippers with 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists and Tate Dolley pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds and added 11 points for the double-double, while also tallying two blocks.
The Mariners shot 36.8 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from behind the arc, while the Clippers shot 24.1 percent overall and 18.2 percent from three-point land. Maine Maritime held a dominating 56-30 advantage in rebounds.
SUNY-Canton's Last Game: Autumn Watkins tallied career-highs of 24 points and six steals but a second half comeback came up just short as the SUNY Canton women's basketball team fell 65-59 to SUNY Delhi in non-league action on Saturday.
SUNY Delhi jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the opening quarter and took a 41-28 lead into intermission. The Broncos shot 8-for-12 (67 percent) from three-point range and 54 percent from the field in the opening half.
Samiaya Salley posted 17 first-half points, while Salley, Kiera Holland and Katelyn Lewis combined to go 7-for-9 on treys. Watkins paced Canton with 12 first-half points, while Autumn Kunes added eight as each player buried a pair of threes.
The Roos outscored the Broncos 18-8 in the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to just one at 47-46 before a Delhi layup just before the third quarter buzzer.
The hosts used a 13-4 run to start the fourth quarter as they extended the lead to 12. Canton was able to cut the deficit to six following a Shannyn St. Andrews basket with 10 seconds remaining but the comeback came up short.
Watkins led all players with 24 points and six steals while adding five rebounds. Kunes chipped in 15 points, five rebounds and four steals and Joie Culkin tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Salley paced the Broncos with 21 points but was held to just four points after intermission. Lewis (12) and Holland (11) also scored in double figures.
The Mariners: After 12 games the Mariners average 65.8 points, 39.7 rebounds, and 12.8 assists per game, while shooting 39.7 percent from the floor, 32.8 percent from three-point land and 65.2 percent from the line.
