WENHAM, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball outscored New England College 28-16 in the fourth quarter to pick up a 69-64 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Classic inside of the Bennett Center.
How it Happened: The Pilgrims jumped out to a 5-0 lead early but a pair of free throws from Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) gave the Mariners their first lead of the game with 3:14 to go in the first quarter and Maine Maritime hung on to a 18-16 lead entering the second.
The two teams battled closely in the second quarter, but NEC began to pull away taking a 36-29 lead into halftime and carried that seven-point lead (48-41) in to the final quarter.
Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) scored nine-unanswered points midway through the fourth quarter to give the Mariners a 56-55 lead and Maine Maritime outscored the Pilgrims 9-6 in the final four minutes, going 9-of-10 from the line, to hold on for the victory.
Inside the Numbers: Ogden led the Mariners with 17 points, two rebounds and two steals, while Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) added 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks and Morgan Boudreau (Benton, Maine) contributed 11 points and two rebounds.
Rene Hudson led NEC with a game-high 22 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists, while both Brianna Pierreval and Ericka Pratt chipped in with 10 points. Pierreval added eight rebounds and Pratt chipped in with six rebounds, four steals and an assist.
Maine Maritime shot 39.1 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from three-point land, while the Pilgrims shot 33.9 percent overall and 18.2 percent from beyond the arc. NEC held a 39-33 advantage in rebounds.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Pilgrims drop to 3-3 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, December 7 when they open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play against Northern Vermont – Johnson at 4:00 pm inside of Smith Gymnasium.
