ORONO, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to UMass-Boston 64-51 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Maine Maritime Tip-Off Tournament at Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Maine at Orono.
How it Happened: The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but UMass went on a 12-point run to take a 12-6 lead late in the first quarter. Maine Maritime tied things up at 15-15 with 2:46 to play, but the Beacons carried an 18-15 lead into the second quarter and held the Mariners to just eight points in the second quarter to take a 32-23 lead into intermission.
Maine Maritime scored two quick buckets to start the third, closing the lead to 32-27, but UMass-Boston maintained a narrow lead throughout the period and the Mariners never fought back from the deficit.
Inside the Numbers: Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with a double-double of 14 rebounds and 11 points, and also contributed an assist and a block, Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) scored a team-high 12 points and pulled down one rebound, and Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) added 11 points, five rebounds, an assist and a block.
Jalani Jackson tallied a game-high 32 points, along with four rebounds, three steals and an assist, Tahjai Mazyck added 12 points, four steals, two assists and a rebound and Joie Grassi contributed 10 points, six rebounds, three steals, an assist and a block.
The Mariners shot 41.7 percent from the floor, but struggled from three-point land shooting just 11.1 percent while the Beacons shot 36.4 percent overall and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. Maine Maritime outrebounded the Beacons 40-31 but committed 32 turnovers, while UMass only turned the ball over 16 times.
Up Next: With the loss the Mariners drop to 0-2 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 2-0 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action against Moravian at the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, November 16 at 4:00 pm.
