ORONO, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Wheaton College 79-73 on Saturday afternoon in their season opener at Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Maine at Orono.
How it Happened: After making the opening bucket, the Mariners trailed the Lyons for most of the first quarter, until a layup from Maddy Candage (Bar Harbor, Maine) gave the Mariners a 19-18 advantage. Wheaton's Natalie Wind hit a three late in the quarter to send the Lyons into the second quarter with a narrow 21-19 edge.
The two teams battled closely in the second quarter, but Wheaton made a pair of buckets late to enter halftime with a 38-37 edge.
Maine Maritime and Wheaton exchanged the lead numerous times to start the third, but the Lyons went on an eight-point run to open up a 58-47 lead with 2:22 to go and held the Mariners in the fourth to take the victory
Inside the Numbers: Morgan Boudreau (Benton, Maine) led the Mariners with 16 points, on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor, two rebounds, and two steals, while Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) added 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal and both Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) and Sydney Underhill-Tilton (Richmond, Maine) tallied 10 points. Ogden added four rebounds, two steals and an assist, while Underhill-Tilton contributed five rebounds, and a steal.
Wind tallied a game-high 20 points to lead the Lyons and also added two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Bri Forbes added 17 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Mikayla Pucci and Ariana Fabiani scored 10 points each.
The Mariners shot 49.0 percent from the floor, while the Lyons shot 44.1 percent. Maine Maritime outrebounded Wheaton 34-27, but committed 21 turnovers compared to the Lyons' 19.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 1-0. Maine Maritime will take on UMass.-Boston in the final day of the Maine Maritime Tip-Off tomorrow, Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 pm inside of Memorial Gym.
