Mariners Tame Fighting Tigers

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's soccer beat SUNY Cobleskill 3-0 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened: The two teams battled back-and-forth for the first 25 minutes, until Jacob Olson (Charleston, Maine) found the back of the net in the 29th minute off an assist from Elijah Yeaton (Farmington, Maine) to give the Mariners a 1-0 led that held through half time.

The Mariners offense continued to put pressure on the Fighting Tigers' defense in the second half, getting 11 shots on net. JD Vandemergel (Brighton, Mich.) scored his first career goal in the 76th minute off a shot that ricocheted off the goalie to extend the Mariner led to 2-0. Pieter Oudejans (Rockledge, Fla.) rounded out the scoring for the Mariners with a goal in the 88th minute off a cross from Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) to claim the 3-0 victory.

Inside the Numbers: The Mariners held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks over the Fighting Tigers. Matthew Castella (San Antonio, Texas) tallied four saves in the win for the Mariners and John Gergen recorded four saves as well for SUNY Cobleskill.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 6-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference, while SUNY Cobleskill falls to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, October 12 when they travel to Waterville to play an out of conference matchup against Colby College.
